Crossroads
Director's Statement
CROSSROADS is the story of a talented young black photographer, Rodney, who makes a decision that changes the course of his life during his college years. I wanted to tell the side of a story that we rarely see depicted in narratives centered around young black males. A "good" kid, who consciously makes a bad decision, recognizes so, and is determined to change. We see Rodney through the eyes of his mother, Elle, a young mother who has worked her whole life to ensure her son did not become a statistic. Often times, black males who enter the prison system within a narrative are depicted as having come from a troubled past with no hope for the future. Reversing that narrative was a conscious thread weaved within my approach as a director, to the film.
Co-written by myself and Bethel Dixon (writer/producer), CROSSROADS will hit deep emotional chords as we witness our main character, Rodney, grapple with his arduous circumstance. The journey of Rodney as a character, from past to present, will cause us to reflect on our own life choices and mistakes made, together coming to the realization that the detours we may experience in life are designed to be honored, as they shape us all into who we ultimately rise to become. Each day of our lives is a crossroad, with decisions in front of us that will inevitably determine our future...CROSSROADS is a reminder to travel the right road, travel well, and travel light.
